Matthew Brace
As first told by masslive.com, a man allegedly attempted to sell his three month-old daughter to a convenient store employee for two 40oz bottles of beer.
According to Chicopee, MA Police Chief, John Ferraro Jr. (see video below) it all started when Matthew Brace, his girlfriend and their 3-month old daughter went to Pride Travel Center Truckstop (located at 363 Burnett Road, Chicopee, MA 01020). Ferraro states that an employee (currently unnamed) asked Brace how old their daughter was, at which point Brace took his daughter, placed her in the employee’s truck and said “You can have her for a couple of 40’s” (slang for 40 ounce bottles of beer or malt liquor). Once the baby was in the truck, the employee demanded that the child be removed and then told Mr. Brace that he would be calling the police, at which point the couple took the baby and left.
After the police arrived and started to investigate, they soon tracked the couple to a nearby Econo Lodge (357 Burnett Road) where, as Mr. Ferraro states, Matthew Brace was attempting to hide the baby’s stroller in a trash bin.

Ferraro said he has never before encountered such a scenario.
“I have seen a lot of atrocities, I have worked a lot of murders, but trying to trade a baby for alcohol (or drugs) is a new low,” he said.
The mother has not been charged, Ferraro said. Police are still investigating the mother’s involvement in the incident.
Ferraro said investigators are also seeking to determine if any federal charges can be applied in the case.
The baby is now in the custody of the state Department of Children and Family Services, Ferraro said.
This is just another in a long line of despicable stories from around the country of the miss treatment of children by their good for nothing parents, but I won’t waste your time spelling out the obvious.
What I really want to know is, who was the employee? In my mind he is the real hero. Based on recent news stories of people ignoring crimes taking place right in front of them, I have a feeling that many people may have just laughed off Brace’s crazy offer and walked away, being apprehensive to get involved. Yet, this guy acted quickly and thanks to him that 3-month old little girl has a better chance at a normal life. Thank God it happened while she is still young enough that she won’t remember this when she gets older.
On a side note, I called the store where this took place but they were not able to give any info as this is an ongoing investigation, but if you would like to let this anonymous hero know that you appreciate his actions, you can always call the store and let tell them (413-592-6190).
